Immovable elbows, arm drags and traffic jams!

Morning everyone

Great lesson last night with everyone working hard. Good to see King Kev and Susan back from their extended new year break (some of you are still on it. Get back to class!).

The demo couldn't of got off to a worse start with me arriving late after sitting in traffic on the M25 for an hour. Still i made it eventually and the group that was waiting for me seemed like a nice bunch and i'm sure will make for a fun new beginners group.

Once the demo was finished we moved onto your lesson. As you can tell I'm a big fan of the immovable elbow when used against an opponent knocking your arm out of the way. It's a simple yet effective way of taking an opponents power and adding it to your own. Just remember when practicing it in class to not hit over the ear as a perforated ear drum is not a pleasant phenomenom! Practice freeing your elbow joints too so your rotation from the shoulder is as little as possible. This keeps the hit tight, fast and powerful. We're going to rep this quite a bit over the next few weeks so it becomes an instinctive part of your pre fight routine.

Onto arm drags. Alot of you have put a fair bit of time into training these now and you should be actively attempting these when sparring. Just remember that the key is a smooth movement where both arms work together. Obviously with any action where you are using your two arms on one of theirs, the energy and timing must be correct or they get free hits on your chin! Once you have them turned you need to be on them quick with either effective striking or using the momentum gained in the arm drag to complete a take down, control position, etc.

Nice work on the pads everyone. We're slowly getting the christmas rust off.

Have fun and see you all tomorrow.

Our little class

First let me start by saying a big congratulations to all of you that passed your gradings last month. It was really hard going and for some it lasted over six hours. 17 out of 21 people passed and to those of you who didn't quite make it, you now have specific training goals for the next few months. I love this quote from Thomas Edison - 'I am not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forwards.'

The new demos are at the end of the month so drag along friends and family. I hope we get another great group starting and well done to those of you who have finished the last course and have now moved up into the main class.

Finally I want to say a big thank you to all of you. I honestly believe that we have such a great group who work hard and support each other. Despite the nature of what we train is serious, we allways seem to have a good laugh and there has never been anything but genuine friendship between us all. That is all something we should be very proud of.

Keep punching
