Weeks 2 and 3 class notes

Evening all

Apologies for not getting this on sooner.

Beginners

I'm very happy with how you are all progressing. Please try to get a little practice in outside of class if you can. Don't let a kettle boil without doing a little footwork!

Now you've started to hit the pads, the tendency is to forget your basic approach to the first hit. Remember the key is to not load your shot so no drawing back or pre clenching of the fist and finish your shot with good balance and weight distribution. Your power and accuracy will develop over time. At the moment you should be looking for the maximum power that still hits the dot of the pad. Build your power up over every rep and the second you miss you need to slow it back down again.

Your hand drills are great and as we now begin to incorporate some footwork, it will continue to push you. Just try to stay relaxed so you can really get a feel for the flowing nature of the style.

Main Class

Remember your mouth guards please as we're sparring at the moment. Of course sparring has limitations but you should remember the 80/20 rule. Spend 80 percent of the time working to improve your instinctive responses and combinations. Spend the other 20 percent upping the pace to see where you are at. Most people tend to do it the other way round. They start off well and try and work things, get hit and then think hang it lets have a tear up! Trust me please and take the pace out of it. Go at a rate where you can change your instinctive reactions.

Should be a good class tomorrow so have a nice night and see you all in the morning.

Feb week 1 class notes

Good Evening everyone

Below are the class notes from the weeks training.

Beginners

Really great to get the opportunity to work with you all.

Punches

See if you can find the time to practice your punches before next week even if it's just a bit of time spent finding your perfect fist. Remember it's the tightest fist you can have without tension in the forearm. The power comes from being relaxed and shooting forwards in a straight line. Use a mirror to ensure your fist travels through and not down at the end of the movement.

Pre Fight

It's all about understanding the language of range and not allowing someone to enter the space where they can hit you without any warning. The bone of your rear arms forearm should be facing their chin (just like an arrow). Stay relaxed but ready to launch forwards and hit without warning. The first time your attacker should be aware that you intend to fight back is after you have hit them!

Energy Drill

Let your arm be pulled. Someone can only apply their strength if you give them something to apply their strength against. Keep your movements small and relaxed. Keep in mind that we are aiming to beat bigger, stronger people. The pathway to achieving this is to learn to let go of the instinct to fight everything that someone is trying to do to you. In your early stages of training, i would reccommend complete relaxation and slowly I will bring some energy into your arms at the right time.

Good job everyone and i'm looking forwards to next week when you start hitting the pads!

Main Class

The theme is still effective strikes. You need to constantly question if your hits are going to do the job or are just simply going to touch your opponents face. You all know how it feels when you hit with power on the pads. This is your reference for all your strikes. To hit requires your arm to extend so it better be worth it or expect that counter over the top.

Get the reps in with your pistons, arm drags and hits through the centre. Reps reps reps!!!

Keep punching

Martin
