Weeks 2 and 3 class notes

Evening all

Apologies for not getting this on sooner.

Beginners

I'm very happy with how you are all progressing. Please try to get a little practice in outside of class if you can. Don't let a kettle boil without doing a little footwork!

Now you've started to hit the pads, the tendency is to forget your basic approach to the first hit. Remember the key is to not load your shot so no drawing back or pre clenching of the fist and finish your shot with good balance and weight distribution. Your power and accuracy will develop over time. At the moment you should be looking for the maximum power that still hits the dot of the pad. Build your power up over every rep and the second you miss you need to slow it back down again.

Your hand drills are great and as we now begin to incorporate some footwork, it will continue to push you. Just try to stay relaxed so you can really get a feel for the flowing nature of the style.

Main Class

Remember your mouth guards please as we're sparring at the moment. Of course sparring has limitations but you should remember the 80/20 rule. Spend 80 percent of the time working to improve your instinctive responses and combinations. Spend the other 20 percent upping the pace to see where you are at. Most people tend to do it the other way round. They start off well and try and work things, get hit and then think hang it lets have a tear up! Trust me please and take the pace out of it. Go at a rate where you can change your instinctive reactions.

Should be a good class tomorrow so have a nice night and see you all in the morning.
